How Did Essay Topics Change Over Time?You have probably been on the receiving end of an essay topic for your high school English exam. But do you know how it has changed over the years? Did the essay topics in your high school English class change in the Victorian era or did they really only evolve over the last few hundred years?In the Victorian era essay topics were more specific and less vague. They were written to present facts, data, and information with the intent to make the student aware of the values and principles that helped shape their time. This is where we get our basics of English, a basic class that we could study in high school and probably have gotten away with without too much effort at all.The Victorian essay topics were not as broad as the subject of today's essays, but they were still varied enough to make the grade. Fact and ideas were presented and debated in this form of English during the Victorian era. They were used to help students learn how to improve th e value of what they learned. Instead of having an essay that revolved around the one factor that influenced the course of events in the story line of the story, the Victorian era essay topics dealt with how people thought, their values, and how they worked to see what society would be like in the future.During the Victorian era essays were also thought of as models for all other essays, whether they were assigned for the English class or for the advanced courses they might have taken. Essays in the Victorian era were viewed as being the best means of teaching students and showing them how to write better essays themselves. Instead of being written in a formulaic style, the Victorian essay topics were more open ended and used to show students how to think about what they were writing.Due to the nature of the Victorian essay topics, we would find that if students did not use the essay topics in their high school English essays to helpthem learn how to write better essays, they would be disregarded. This was done in order to make sure that the essay topics were used and discussed in a more formal manner. The teacher realized that a lot of people were not focusing on the essay topics and the structure, so he created a way to mold these students and make them more receptive to the writing ability that would soon be their own.Many students from the Victorian era were the ones that would go on to create the essay topics of today, because they saw the importance of the format in today's high school essays. In the high school essay topics that we have today, we have much more open ended questions and more views on certain issues than in the Victorian era. The curriculum also changed significantly in the Victorian era, making it even harder for students to succeed in their studies.Since so many students used the Victorian essay topics in their high school English classes, we would now probably expect them to not only stay with the format, but also to be the most influe ntial writers from that time period. We would expect to see the essay topics for today's high school English essays to be more open ended and contain more discussions of social issues and the changes of the times in the society.
